As a follow up to my September 8 post ‘Pavarotti to be remembered at Petra by Elton John, Bono, Celine Dion, Joe Cocker and Sting‘ – and as a once aspiring opera singer myself – it is thrilling to see that the two surviving members of the musical trio simply known as “the Three Tenors” celebrating the late maestro’s ambition to perform at one of the World’s Seven New Wonders.

As this event continues to gain in excitement and momentum, the list of singers now also includes opera stars Roberto Alagna, Angela Gheorghiu and Andrea Bocelli, all conducted by Maestro Eugene Kohn according to the Epoch Times.

The Hashemite Kingdom of late, becoming a popular backdrop to the “big singing” as just this past summer, Placido Domingo, Julia Migenes, and jazz singer Diana Krall were the highlight acts at this year’s Jordan Festival.

A number of noted non-singing celebrities will also be among the exclusive guest list of 500, including Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, the billionaire ruler of Dubai who is married to Princess Haya – daughter of the late Hussein bin Talal, King of Jordan (may his name be blessed).

As Reuters reports:

The tribute is the brainchild of Nicoletta Mantovani, Pavarotti’s widow and HRH Princess Haya, a fellow UN Messenger of Peace and daughter of Jordan’s late King Hussein. “A concert in Petra was a dream once shared by the late King Hussein of Jordan and Luciano,” said Mantovani. “I am so grateful to Her Royal Highness Princess Haya, for making it possible to turn this dream into a reality.”

An unusual perspective of the Treasurey by by: MarceloRuizThe proceeds of the concert will support joint projects in Afghanistan by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the UN World Food Programme (WFP).  A local charity supporting disabled children in Petra will also benefit from the concert. Fear not, as Jordan, for the first time, is hosting the 17th Pan-Arab Scholastic Games – the largest Arab gathering of school sports.

Held under the patronage of His Majesty King Abdullah, this event runs from August 20 to September 1, this athletic competition will bring together over 2,000 athletes from 18 Arab countries where they will compete in several sports events including:

  • football (soccer)
  • basketball
  • handball
  • volleyball
  • table tennis
  • badminton
  • swimming

According to the Jordan Times:

Minister of Education Tayseer Nueimi said the fact that Jordan was chosen for the event demonstrates the country’s ability to host such high calibre sports tournaments, underlining that the Kingdom’s teams had been given all forms of support to prepare for the Games.

Director of the Arab League’s Youths and Sports Department Hani Mustafa said that Jordan was known for good organisation, hoping the Games would be a success. Fathi Idriss, deputy secretary of the Arab Physical Fitness and School Sports Association, commended the big effort undertaken by the Kingdom to prepare for the tournament.

Participating nations, other than Jordan, include Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Comoros, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Yemen, Iraq, Syria, Palestine and Lebanon.

Now if they’d just update the English version of the Jordanian Ministry of Education website, I might be able to link up with more information (or perhaps I should just finish learning Arabic and start healing web sites over there).

Souk Jara is a Jordanian annual, weekly flea market event organized by the Jabal Amman Residents Association (Jara) that occurs every Friday throughout the summer that offers a variety of family-oriented activities including:

  • new games for kids and adults Souk Jara Games
  • delicious treats at the Souk Jara Cafe
  • musical concerts and films at the Souk Jara Theater
  • and plenty of good deals on handcrafts, antitiquties and other home made items at the Souk Jara Market

The last Souk Jara for 2008 season will open at 10AM and close at 10PM and is being held in Jabal Amman, First Circle, Jara Street (Fawzi Malouf Street). For you tourist types, Jabal Amman is one of the original 7 hills that made Amman and is now one of its classical quarters. Amman of course is the capital of Jordan.

In this 9-11 hours trip, you’ll be hiking the wadi (around 6 hours hiking the two-way route, including breaks) and experiencing its beauty through the two waterfalls, hidden pool, sparkling stalactites, and vegetation clusters.
